Is there any wisdom in dropping a mix tape just over a week before dropping an album proper? Up until now, I'd have said absolutely none.
In fact, it seems rather stupid to me. But even this Grumpy Old Man With A Beard™ is willing to concede that I sometimes get it wrong. Okay, okay, quite often.
So when Slaughterhouse - the pin up posse for underground fan boys the world over - dropped their new mix tape On The House a mere eight days before their Shady Records debut is due, I thought they'd shot themselves in the foot.
Admittedly, there were all sorts of delays. But they obviously back themselves more than I do, because rather than get cold feet they have indeed dropped the freebie On The House (with a little help from Mr Gangsta Griz-illz, DJ Drama).
And you know what? It's rather good. Good rhymes (which wasn't really going to be a problem with the M.C.s involved) and good beats for the most part (the potential stumbling block in my mind) = a good release.
In fact, it's made me think about buying their album, Welcome To: Our House, which I really wasn't considering until hearing this mix tape. Guess that's the whole point really, innit? I stand corrected.
Whether or not the masses are content with the free Slaughterhouse hit and choose not to shell out when said album drops on 28 August remains to be seen.
But for now, I'd suggest giving On The House one spin if you haven't already. You might be pleasantly surprised like me.
